Submitting A GEDCOM File

GEDCOM is an acronym which stands for GEnealogical Data COMmunications. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) developed this standard file format for exchange of information between different genealogy software programs.

Some of you are familiar with GEDCOM files and how to use them. For others this may be something new. I have offered a brief description below.

If you are using a software program to record your family tree, it probably already has the utility to import and export GEDCOM files. I am familiar with Family Tree Maker, Family Origins, and My Brother’s Keeper software and they all have the GEDCOM option.

This option is usually listed under the ‘File’ pull down menu.

Select the Import/Export option. Some software will give you the Import/Export GEDCOM option (Family Origins) from the pull down menu. Others (Family Tree Maker) will take you from the Import/Export choice in the pull down menu to another dialog box where you will need to specify or select the GEDCOM option in the ‘save as type’ box.

Give your file a title and export it to a floppy disc (or any folder you choose). The file will be called ‘your title.ged’.

Send this file as an attachment to an e-mail message to me and I will post it on the web site in the same format as the other files there.

Before I post your file, my software will remove any personal notes you may have entered. Any persons still living (those in your file wihout a death date) will be listed as 'private'.

If this all sounds terribly confusing, it is! It takes some time to get used to it.

Contact the technical support people for the software you are using and tell them you want to create a GEDCOM file. They will talk you through the process for your specific software.

Send me an e-mail and I will also try to help.

This is all quite exciting for people working on the Engelbach/Englebach/Engleback surname and we want to help share as much information as we possibly can.

Thank you for your interest.
